Dorm Room Essentials Every College Girl Actually Needs (From a Mom who Just Packed One Off!!!)

Sending your daughter off to college is emotional, exiting – and honesty a little overwhelming. Between the target runs and amazon orders, its’s easy to overpack, under pack, or forget the essentials that really make dorm life feel like home.

As a mom who just went through it, I’m sharing the must-haves we actually used, the surprising things I research for most, and the items you can skip altogether.

If you’re getting ready for move-in day, this list will help you pack smart and stress less. πŸ’› You can also find a printable version of this list by clicking here.

πŸ›οΈ 1. Bedding That Feels Like Home

  • Twin XL Mattress Topper (most college use this size, however there are some exceptions so check with your college)
  • Soft Sheets (2 sets)
  • Cozy Blanket
  • 2 Pillows (one firm, one soft)
  • Cute throw pillow (totally optional but adds comfort + personality)

Tip: Skip the bed skirt. Dorm beds are lifted, but it’s not visible.

⚑ 2. Power & Tech Must-Haves

  • Long charging cords (6-10 ft)
  • Clip-on lamp
  • desk lamp with charging port
  • Wireless earbuds or noise-canceling headphones
  • Small fan (especially if there’s no AC)
  • router (this is something that was required by my daughters college in order to have internet access on their dorm)

🚿 3. Bathroom & Shower Essentials

  • Shower caddy (plastic is better than mesh!)
  • Quick-dry towels (2 large + 2 hand)
  • Shower shoes
  • Robe or towel wrap
  • Toiletry case for overnight stays

🍜 4. Food & Kitchen Basics

Each dorm has different policies about what you can have in your room or not. Make sure what are the guidelines in your dorm.

  • Mini Keurig or electric kettle
  • Microwave-safe bowls and mugs
  • Reusable utensils
  • Snack bin or cart
  • Refillable water bottle

🧺 5. Laundry & Cleaning Supplies

  • Pop-up laundry hamper
  • Stain remover stick
  • Detergent pods
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Mini vacuum or handheld broom
  • Mop stick

πŸŽ’ 6. Dorm Life Extras That Made a Big Difference

  • Command hooks & strips
  • Over-the-door organizers
  • A cozy rug (small)
  • Storage bins or cubes
  • Full-length mirror (if not provided)
  • Tension curtain rod (to add curtain to your window without damaging the wall)

πŸ’¬ Final Thoughts:

You don’t have to bring everything. Dorm rooms are small, and what matters most is helping your college student feel comfortable, capable, and ready for this next chapter. I hope this list makes packing a little easier β€” and move-in day a little smoother.πŸ’•
